Smart Cities - Starting from the basics

The day 1 at Smart Cities India 2015 Exhibition and Conference held at Pragati Maidan highlighted the basics on smart city planning approach. Babul Supriyo, Minister of State for Urban Development and Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation attended the conference and shared his views.

“Smart cities is an ambitious project for all of us. It is the vision of honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi which is now a national goal. Lot of smart men and women are working in the metropolitan cities however, not all cities are smart enough to match up with their lifestyle. With this project, we aim at addressing the issue of urbanization in India and making the target of developing 100 smart cities achievable," he said.
In the current scenario, many people are migrating from rural areas to cities, due to which there is a constant increase in the population of metropolitans. Our cities are not ready to accommodate the influx. Paul Doherty, an architect by profession, CEO, The Digit Group, Inc., USA, says, “India is facing urbanization, the cities are not in a proper shape and depend upon technology to change its shape. The conference also highlighted the best in smart features and functions to be applied that will help in gaining maximum benefits at minimum cost. These will assist in improving the quality of life by brining efficiency in various sectors such as health, energy, transport, water, education, etc.
Dr Sumit Chowdhury, Founder Gaia Smart Cities, India shared his opinion in the conference, “In order to achieve the first basic level of smart infrastructure we need to share data and information amongst each other to find patterns to develop multiple cities with common infrastructure.”
Smart cities are not only about information and communication technology but also about sustainable economic growth units providing shelter, power, mobility, high living standards, cleaner air and jobs.
Various speakers addressed the question on what is the major challenge being faced by India in this initiative of smart city. There are various challenges which are being addressed right now and the government is working on it too. However, the major concern is to get collaboration, capture the true spirit of public and private people partnerships.
