ITO Metro station the first single line extension in the history of DMRC

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and M Venkaiah Naidu, the Union Minister for Urban Development, inaugurated the ITO Metro station, a commuter hub that is widely expected to be one of the busiest stops on the Delhi Metro network.

In fact the station is so important that it prompted an amendment of the Metro Railway General Rules of 2013. IT must be noted that major work on the ITO station had been done by January of this year but it could not become functional because it was a single-line extension of the Badarpur-Mandi House line.

The Metro Railway General Rules do not permit single-line extensions and the Union Ministry had to step in to modify the rules. This was followed by the Compliance Management and Reporting System (CMRS) inspection, an essential step towards the readying of Metro services on any line.

The ITO line extension is 971 metres long and is expected to drive traffic of 22000 passengers every day in the beginning. The number is expected to go up to 31000 by the year 2021 and is estimated to add to the DMRC’s yearly revenue by INR 8 crore.

An area that houses many important government departments, ITO is home to the headquarters of Delhi Police and the Public Works Department (PWD), in addition to the Income Tax office and a host of media offices. Approximately 1.75 lakh vehicles pass through the ITO area on a daily basis and the Metro station is expected to ease off the strain on roads to a considerable degree.

The station will also host a permanent exhibition of some of the important and historic landmarks in the ITO area which stretches from the Supreme Court of India on the one hand and the Firoz Shah Kotla monument on the other.
