Civic body gets Rs283 crore for smart city projects

The Union government chipped in with Rs 186 crore, while the state gave Rs 93 crore, while Rs 4 crore was deducted as administrative charges.

The Pune Smart City Development Corporation (PSCDC) received Rs 283 crore, the first instalment of funds for projects under the Smart Cities Mission, from the Union and state governments on Friday.

"The funds were sent through the district collector's office. The tenders issued for various projects will be processed now that the funds are available. Work orders will be issued," municipal commissioner Kunal Kumar told reporters.

The Union government chipped in with Rs 186 crore, while the state gave Rs 93 crore, while Rs 4 crore was deducted as administrative charges.

The corporation was registered in March. It will implement the projects in association with the civic body. It has planned to start 15 projects under this scheme in the next three months.

Smart city initiatives are estimated to cost Rs 3,480 crore. Along with funds from the Union government, the civic body and the state government, funds will be raised from other sources for the actual implementation of these projects. The civic body wants to rope in private investors.

Kumar, also a director of PSCDC, said the initiatives regarding traffic and garbage disposal will be started using funds received as the first instalment.

The adaptive signal system for city areas and the model road in area development sections like the Aundh-Baner-Balewadi are on the cards. Civic officials said funds were handed over to the state government on April 6.

The officials said the delay was caused because of budget allocations and other formalities, such as approvals from different stakeholders.
