How ‘smart’ is your city? Tell us!

A lot has been said about ‘Smart Cities’ - from which areas have been shortlisted to how citizen participation would ensure a better chance of your city qualifying as smart. However, at the end of the day, the ultimate question remains - Do you feel that your city qualifies to be a Smart City? If yes, we would like to know!

There are various parameters on the basis of which you can rate your city:
    • Is there ample attention by the authorities in making your city liveable?
    • Is the transport system efficient?
    • Have the government/ municipal corporation ensured safety on the streets?
    • How does the authority address public grievances?
    • Is the basic civic infrastructure in place - drainage, sewerage, roads?
    • Is your city adopting progressive measures such as ‘Swacch Bharat’?

In a recent article where we captured the Swacch Bharat rankings, readers expressed their opinions about their part of the city.
Rajesh Babu from Puducherry says, “I live in Nehru Nagar, a locality that is just 3-km from the beach and the bus stand. Despite more than 500 families living in this area, the roads aren’t tarred, cattle roam around freely on the roads, garbage gets piled up and issues occur with the existence of improper drainage system. I haven’t seen any corporation vehicle that would address this issue on a routine basis. People might think that Puducherry is clean but when it comes to rankings, it has a long way to go.”
Madan Mohan, another reader expressed, “We have to address the basic problems. Dustbins meant for common public are stolen overnight, residents dispose plastic bags, shoes, paper plates, etc. on the roads. We cannot afford to keep our country so unclean.”
Karim Khan feels Mumbai has turned into a slum over the years and believes there are issues that should be locally addressed.
Karnataka boasts the rare distinction of occupying four slots in the list of the top ten in the Swacch Bharat rankings. Mysuru, Hassan, Mandya and Bengaluru were marked the cleanest when it comes to solid waste management provisions adopted at the local level. Do we stop at this? As per our readers, these rankings are merely comparative and there’s still more that needs to be done.
