Agra tops country in voting for the Smart City Project


AGRA: Living behind 97 cities who are in the race for the selection in the first phase development of smart city, Agra has topped list of number of votes cast by residents of the city.

As per data obtained from Agra Municipal Corporation, total 1,28,447 votes were cast in the favour of smart city project on mygov.in website, which was more than 81 % higher than Jhansi which came second with 24,107 votes. The AMC received additional 1,28,987 votes on its official website.

As per data, Agra residents gave 1,28,342 suggestions on AMC website while merely 14,117 thoughts were shared on making smart city on mygov.in.

The data further revealed that, city like Nagpur, Greater Mumbai, Bhubaneswar, Vadodara, Vishakhapatnam, Muzaffarpur, Davanegere, Kochi, Kavaratti and 19 other cities reported zero voting for the smart city project on mygov.in, while eight cities didn't get a single vote neither a suggestion for the project.

Highest number of suggestion for the project was received by Allahabad (1,63,282) with 2,422 votes followed by Jhansi 1,45,707 suggestions, Aligarh 1,34,888, Bhopal 1,12,555 and others.

There were seven cities from Uttar Pradesh in top 10 who received highest votes and suggestion, while national capital New Delhi received merely 516 votes and 134 suggestion.

Speaking to TOI, commissioner of Agra Municipal Corporation IndraVikram Singh said, "This is great moment for us. Our citizens have outsmarts residents of Delhi, Mumbai and others in terms of voting to make their city smart."

As per rules for development of smart city, out of the total percentage in smart city project, public participation was given 16 % weightage, to ensure berth in top 20 cities list for the first phase development.
