Governor wants to know why UP ignored PM Modi's housing scheme

LUCKNOW: Governor Ram Naik on Friday wrote to chief minister Akhilesh Yadav expressing his displeasure over UP not sending any proposal for Centre's housing scheme for urban poor. In his letter, Naik sought to know why the state urban department, headed by cabinet minister Azam Khan, did not respond to the repeated reminders from the Centre to send proposal for the scheme. Issuing a statement on Friday, the governor said PM Narendra Modi had launched the housing scheme in June 2015 promising houses to urban poor by 2022.

Most of the states responded to it and sent in their proposals to seek funds, but UP stayed away, Naik pointed out in his letter. The Union urban development ministry has sanctioned nine lakh housing units with an investment Rs 53,581 crore in the current financial year for all states. When the governor met Union urban development minister Venkaiah Naidu on August 30 the latter apprised him that 21 states have started implementing the scheme with the help of central funds but UP has kept away from it.

Naik and Azam have attacked each other on several issues in the recent past. It remains to be seen if Naik's latest letter would trigger another war of words between him and the minister.
